Multivariate analyses of genotype x environment interaction of popcorn PAB
Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Guimarães,Lauro José Moreira; Namorato,Heraldo; Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues; Soares,Marcelo Oliveira.
The objectives of this work were to evaluate the genotype x environment (GxE) interaction for popcorn and to compare two multivariate analyses methods. Nine popcorn cultivars were sown on four dates one month apart during each of the agricultural years 1998/1999 and 1999/2000. The experiments were carried out using randomized block designs, with four replicates. The cv. Zélia contributed the least to the GxE interaction. The cv. Viçosa performed similarly to cv. Rosa-claro. Optimization of GxE was obtained for cv. CMS 42 for a favorable mega-environment, and for cv. CMS 43 for an unfavorable environment. Multivariate analysis supported the results from the method of Eberhart & Russell. The graphic analysis of the Additive Main effects and...

Mutation induction as a strategy to overcome the restricted genetic base in Physalis Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Trevisani,Nicole; Melo,Rita Carolina de; Bernardy,João Pedro Fossa; Pierre,Patrícia Maria Oliveira; Coimbra,Jefferson Luís Meirelles; Guidolin,Altamir Frederico.
Abstract The restricted genetic base in physalis in Southern Brazil is a challenge that requires genetic breeding for the achievement of fruits with superior agronomic quality. Therefore, genetic changes were induced in physalis for the selection of populations with superior fruit quality. To that end, seven populations of physalis were submitted to gamma irradiation (0,100 and 200 Grays – Gy), which provided 21 populations. Significant population difference was observed, which indicates the existence of variability between at least two populations of physalis. The contrasts showed difference for Colômbia01, Colômbia02, Caçador and CAV. The mutation induction was effective at causing genetic variations in these populations. For Colombia01 (100 Gy), it was...

Natural Experiment Evidence on Whether Selection Bias Overstates the Gains from Migration AgEcon
Gibson, John; McKenzie, David; Rohorua, Halahingano; Stillman, Steven.
Migration of workers from developing to developed countries and the resulting remittance flows are important development policies. World Bank calculations show that restrictions on international migration have larger welfare costs than the more widely studied restrictions on international trade. But estimated gains from migration may be affected by selection bias, with differences in outcomes for migrants and non-migrants reflecting unobserved differences in ability, skills, and motivation, rather than the act of moving itself. This poster illustrates this selection bias in commonly used statistical corrections for nonrandom selection. A unique survey conducted by the authors of Tongan migrants in New Zealand, and of non-migrants in Tonga is used. New...

Kalil Filho, Antonio Nascim; Hirano, Elcio; Sturion, José Alfredo; Sousa, Valderês Aaparecida de; Marzollo, Luiz Gustvo; Nicolotti, Filipe; Ukan, Daniele.
Exploitation of imbuya (Ocotea porosa) occurred at the same time of Araucaria angustifolia. Imbuya is threatned of extinction, owns a valuable wood and for these characteristics, Embrapa Florestas, located at Colombo, State of Paraná, Brazil, decided to make efforts for its conservation ex-situ. Collects in Southern Brazil at the localities of Caçador, Canoinhas (State of Santa Catarina), Colombo and Bocaiúva do Sul (State of Paraná) were realized. A complete randomized design was used in 12 months age seedlings. In this experiment, height of thirty one progenies ordered in plots of five plants with four replications was measured. The general mean for height was 16,55 cm. The additive genetic variance estimate was 72,03, the heritability coefficient...

Optimum contribution selection using differential evolution R. Bras. Zootec.
Carvalheiro,Roberto; Queiroz,Sandra Aidar de; Kinghorn,Brian.
A program to determine optimum contribution selection using differential evolution was developed. The objective function to be optimized was composed by the expected merit of the future progeny and the coancestry among selected parents. Simulated and real datasets of populations with overlapping generations were used to validate and test the performance of the program. The program was computationally efficient and feasible for practical applications. The expected consequences of using the program, in contrast to empirical procedures to control inbreeding and/or to selection based exclusively on expected genetic merit, would be the improvement of the selection response and a more effective control of inbreeding.

Persistence in milk, fat and protein production of primiparous Holstein cows by random regression models R. Bras. Zootec.
Biassus,Igor de Oliveira; Cobuci,Jaime Araújo; Costa,Claudio Napolis; Rorato,Paulo Roberto Nogara; Braccini Neto,José; Cardoso,Leandro Lunardini.
Total numbers of 56,508, 35,091 and 8,326 records of milk, fat, and protein test-day yields, respectively, were used to estimate genetic parameters for six persistency measures on milk, fat and protein productions of Holstein cows reared in Minas Gerais state. Covariance components for additive genetic effects and permanent environmental effects were estimated by REML in random regression models using Legendre polynomials from the third to the sixth order. Overall, models with the highest orders of Legendre polynomials showed the best quality of adjustments of these productive records. Heritability estimates obtained by the models for persistence in milk, fat, and protein yields ranged from 0.04 to 0.32, from 0.00 to 0.23, and from 0.00 to 0.27,...

Persistency of lactation using random regression models and different fixed regression modeling approaches R. Bras. Zootec.
Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Costa,Claudio Napolis.
Milk yield test-day records on the first three lactations of 25,500 Holstein cows were used to estimate genetic parameters and predict breeding values for nine measures of persistency and 305-d milk yield in a random regression animal model using two criteria to define the fixed regression. Legendre polynomials of fourth and fifth orders were used to model the fixed and random regressions of lactation curves. The fixed regressions were adjusted for average milk yield on populations (single) or subpopulations (multiple) formed by cows that calved at the same age and in the same season. Akaike Information (AIC) and Bayesian Information (BIC) criteria indicated that models with multiple regression lactation curves had the best fit to test-day milk records of...

Physical and chemical variability of Camu-camu fruits in cultivated and uncultivated areas of the Colombian Amazon Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Aguirre-Neira,Juan Carlos; Reis,Maurício Sedrez dos; Cardozo,Maritza Adelina Rojas; Raz,Lauren; Clement,Charles Roland.
Abstract Camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia, Myrtaceae) has the highest reported vitamin C concentrations of any native Amazonian fruit tree species, with increasing demand in domestic and international markets. With the goal of aiding management and conservation programs, we studied the diversity of camu-camu in cultivated and uncultivated areas, based on physicochemical characterization of the fruits. We evaluated 2,250 fruits from 87 plants from six localities of the Tarapacá district (Amazonas, Colombia) and from the Amazonian fruit germplasm bank of Agrosavia (Meta, Colombia). We found high physicochemical variability within and among localities, and superior fruits in the localities where non-cultivated plants were sampled, especially Pechiboy. Using...

Positive, negative and marker-free strategies for transgenic plant selection Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Aragão,Francisco José Lima; Brasileiro,Ana Cristina Miranda.
In this review, the use of the most common selection marker genes on plant transformation and the effects of their respective selective agents are discussed. These genes could be divided in two categories according their mode of action: genes for positive and negative selection. The retention of the marker gene flow through chloroplast transformation is also discussed. Further, strategies to recover marker-free transgenic plants, involving multi-auto-transformation (MAT), co-transformation, site-specific recombination and intragenomic relocation of transgenes through transposable elements are reviewed.

Predicting the genetic gain in the Brazilian white maize landrace Ciência Rural
Souza,Ana Raquel Ribeiro e; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga; Souza,Leandro Vagno de.
The objectives of this research were to evaluate the genetic variability and predict genetic gain in the white maize landrace rescued in Barbacena, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Brazilian maize landraces have economic and social importance for certain areas in Brazil, and research on this germplasm is very important for local food security. Three experiments were carried out with 100 half-sib progenies, in Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Coimbra and Barbacena, Minas Gerais, Brazil. These sites were chosen for their soil and climatic differences. An analysis of variance was significant among the progeny for all characters, indicating the presence of genetic variability between the three populations. In Campos dos Goytacazes and Coimbra, the genetic variation of the...
